Task 2: Pupils 'Learn from Foetal Moves' (Deadline: March 31, 2006)

Children who do daily exercises, mimicking a baby in the womb, have shown dramatic improvements in maths and English, new research suggests.
The technique, Primary Movement, has been championed by Dr Martin McPhillips from Queen's University Belfast.
Until recently, it had not been formally tested. But the first academic study has startled the sceptics.
Primary Movement is based on the fact that while they are still in the womb, babies are practising for life outside.
They go through a range of movements and reflexes while they are still foetuses, but usually grow out of them by the time they are one year old.
However, some never get past the habits formed as a foetus.
For some reason, that has been shown to hold back their school work.
However, getting pupils to mimic those baby movements every day in class is said to bring astounding improvements.
Dr McPhillips, a psychologist who developed the programme, said: "We adapted the foetal movements for school children.
"Sometimes we disguised them in songs and dance. The programme is a re-enactment of foetal life."

He admitted that it sounded "a little ridiculous".
"But when you see the foetus move, it does make a lot more sense," he said.
"These are very powerful movements and they are at a critical point in development when so much of the central nervous system for example is being laid down."
Many primary schools have tried the movement therapy but, until recently, there had been no formal research.
Progress followed
However, a new study has measured the effect of the special daily exercises.
Dr Julie-Anne Jordan-Black followed the progress of 1,000 children from 13 schools.
"Some children received the primary movement programme, some didn't and they were a control group," she explained.
"The results have shown that the children who received primary movement significantly increased their standard score in maths, spelling and reading."
Schools involved in the study reported good results. Karen Smyth of Holy Family school in Teconnaught, County Down, is an enthusiast.
She reported jumps in standardised scores following the use of primary movement.

"We would have seen standardised scores jumping in English from about 93 to over 110, which was massive.
"Normally, the child would move two to three points from year to year," she said.
"Maths was the same. It went right through from lower ability children to the top of the class."
The research was paid for by the Council for the Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment (CCEA).
However, before it is introduced across Northern Ireland, Carmel Gallagher from CCEA wants more proof that it really works.
"The research is coming through quite strongly that this movement programme has an impact on children's reading age," she said.
"But let's make sure that this is the case, can this research be replicated outside Northern Ireland and then, if absolutely proven, I think that CCEA and the Department of Education would be hugely interested in seeing something like this applied right across the education system."
The researchers said they had now done that and a study in Australia has been completed which shows similar improvements to those reported by teachers in Northern Ireland.

hello teacher:

:P i`m really agree with the article because i now how important can be the formation of the foetus in that stage of the life.
what i read was a litle investigation about what happend when the foetus was esposed to slow and relaxed music. that is the reason why i`m not very much surprised with this aricle.

:P:P

bye see you on the classroom

or maybe buying some bread

hello teacher Claudia Beríos: Good professor although I did not understand much I articulate, I must say that I agree in which the children or we ourself year to year we learn new things and each you see but difficult depending on level of studies that we have, and thus also I believe that it is necessary to put a test to these children or any person to see if it is necessary or if it can really work with them... so that probably if they do not put a prove during a time can that single wastes the time. Bueno that was that I understood of I articulate and if that were that is what I think. Good professor interesting east seemed to me super I articulate spear soon.

I do not create much, are children who you have greater capacity for certain things that some do not have that to depend on the person and by I complete not to understand much the question I number two

I think that the article is interesting, because speaks of the techniques of the primary movement and at the same time advises some what it is necessary to make when the baby is in the uterus. I agree with what says, so if they can sing or to teach music or mathematics to their beby much better

good bye teacher

im not agree with the article, because i don't believe than the exercise of possition foetal rusulte it.
I think than is a bad research and the cientifics are crazy, because the possition foetal is only for develop also I believe than scientifics aren't good

I think than this article is very interesting and than is true, because the develop foetal is a stage basic of the live, help to the develop human, helping to the brain and relax to the body.
I am agree with the article, also because this was reserched for scientifics and because did test in the school and found good result in math and english.

first, I think that it is possible that the children increase their mental capacity with the fetal exercises,
,because I have listened that the music classic and mother voice benefit the foetal development.

second, I agree with this text ,because nothing is lost when trying these exercises in the children if it is for them benefit

Teacher:
I so agree with the article, but I didn't understand very well the text. I believe that if in the pregnancy, the mother feeds well and don't smokes y don't drink, the baby'll born salutary and so the baby can be more inteligent, and best if they do things for the foetus. Is very probable that with the article says the babies when born happen this. Ok, it's my opinion.
See you later.

I think that it' s a interesting article because is based in a important investigation, where we can see the effects that the foetal movements produce in the childrens. The exercises help at the childrens for to have more mental capacity.

Francisco Flores Araya 3°A said...

I think that it is very important to take care of itself to make abrupt movements. This would cause a very serious damage in the baby. Now people have to practice exercises and though children have a best mental capacity .

good bye bye
